History
INTUIT Dance was created in 2004 by Diane VanDerhei to teach the creative process. In its home at 237 Harrison Street, in the heart of the Oak Park Arts District, INTUIT Dance offers Adult, Teen and Children's classes. Artistic director Diane VanDerhei has designed a curriculum for INTUIT to reach all levels of students. The Children's division is a unique dance experience where children learn dance technique, improvisation and create choreography. INTUIT's adult and teen classes have world class instructors with extensive teaching, performing and choreographic credits. Classes are designed to promote a healthy life style and to nurture each individual's creativity, technical development and personal expression.

Philosophy
Children are naturally intuitive, inquisitive and expressive. So much of education is about acquiring needed language and math skills that we begin to teach along a linear pathway of right and wrong. The dance classes at INTUIT cultivate the direct experience of the senses. Through the use of improvisation and creative movement, children learn the creative process. Children are involved in highly structured classes which include warm-ups that pattern the body’s connections, exploration of the dance theme, dance technique, problem solving to create small dance studies, and to reflect on the learning process. Each child's voice is unique and their movement vocabulary and personal expression will be nurtured at INTUIT Dance.

» 237 Harrison was chosen for the site of INTUIT Dance because it does NOT have a concrete subfloor. (Concrete floors create all kinds of physical problems for dancers because they have no "give".)

» INTUIT is in the heart of the Oak Park Arts District and is close to public transportation.

» We try to keep classes at INTUIT affordable. There are no hidden recital or registration costs. Diane VanDerhei believes that dance education should be every child's right, not just for those who can afford it. She provides scholarships for those in need.
